No todo en Detroit se escribe con acento masculino; la ciudad del motor y su extensa, robusta tradición electrónica es también una de las que menos féminas ha registrado desde su auge en la década de los 90. Ahora, y después de casi un lustro de deficiencia creativa e imaginativa, el Techno con denominación de origen venido de la ciudad consigue volver a entusiasmar, gracias en parte a una renovación de artistas y una bajada de la media de edad: MGUN, Kyle Hall, el propio Omar S o los regresos en forma de Terrence Dixon o Three Chairs son algunos de los motivos. Aún muy desconocida, Elizabeth Merrick-Jefferson debutaba hace tan solo unos meses en Argot Music (sello ubicado en Chicago y que está comandado por uno de los pilares del portal Little White Earbuds, Steve Mizek), donde presentaba tres cortes maníacos y de Techno contemporáneo rasgado por fibrosos garabatos de sintetizador y rítmica psicótica muy cercana a las excursiones de Jamal Moss.
“I listen to everything. I spend most of my time listening to jazz, soul, and rap. Detroit has always had an amazing musical heritage aside from techno. The techno thing just kind of never left me once the underground parties died down in Detroit”. Es lo que le dijo Elizabeth al blog Truants en una reciente entrevista, cuando le preguntan por la huella de la ciudad en su aprendizaje. Además, asegura que se crió escuchando a The Wizard, factor que le da aún más creatividad a su discurso sonoro; “Urban Off Road” no innova ni describe parámetros que no hayamos contemplado antes, pero demuestra que en Detroit aún hay jóvenes con las raíces bien asimiladas y mirando fijamente al futuro. Once again, Detroit shows the world it’s not void of new talent. After Kyle Hall unearthed the lo-fi sounds of Manuel Gonzales it seems fitting that Argot, a label based in Detroit’s sister city Chicago, would unveil the uptempo and manic synthesizers of Elizabeth Merrick-Jefferson. Last month she released her debut 12-inch, “Urban Off Road” – a three-track EP that takes the listener on a whirlwind journey into modern techno. Aside from that record there’s not much information available on her, so we had a quick chat with her about her past and future. After showing off her production chops with a standout 12-inch, we thought it the perfect time for the world to get glimpse into what she can do behind the decks. That brings us to the 69th installment of our Truancy Volume series and in just over an hour she’s shown that she is just as capable mixing records as programming drum machines.
